HMRC SCAM - IMPORTANT

A new very scary scam has emerged involving HMRC; this happened to a client only 2 weeks ago.

  • A so-called court bailiff rang circa 6pm (after office hours) stating he’s a bailiff collecting a debt on behalf of HMRC.
  • He started by quoting information they know about ,you to convince you they are genuine.
  • He stated my client owed £800+ and £400 in bailiff fees and asked, “do you have online banking?”.
  • He then said, “I am 15mins from your house and I have a locksmith with me to gain entry to your property, unless you make an immediate payment online.”
  • When making online payments yourself – you are NOT protected from the bank’s procedures – you will NOT be reimbursed by the bank, even though many banks are signing up to reimburse customers who are victims of scams, but this scam is not included as you have freely given the money to them.
  • He was extremely aggressive, and my client’s wife was in tears. She took the children to friend’s house.
  • My client called me and I was able to confirm he didn’t owe HMRC anything.
  • Needless to say, no one turned up.

The aggressiveness and hard pressure is what they are praying on; you may think "if I don't owe it, I will get it back", no you wont.

The fact is, HMRC wont take anyone to court for such small sums; clients have owed HMRC in the past thousands of ££ for 12-months and HMRC did nothing; of course you would incur interest and penalties on unpaid tax.

Please pass this onto all family and friends.

TIP: on my white board I have a list of all tax payments due in the next 12-months, so I know at all times what tax I owe and when; also prevents me from missing payments and incurring additional charges or accidently spending the money one something else.
